Tanz – das klingt nach Schwerelosigkeit und Leichtigkeit. Doch Tanzkunst ist körperliche Schwerstarbeit. Spätestens mit 40 Jahren haben die Tänzer:innen oft ihren Zenit erreicht. In der Reife steckt aber auch großes künstlerisches Potenzial, das die Glorifizierung der Jugend zunehmend infrage stellt. Der Film porträtiert u.a. die Ballettstars Polina Semionova und Friedemann Vogel. Es ist die Illusion der Schwerelosigkeit und zugleich ein romantisches Klischee: anmutige Luftwesen, die feengleich in Tüllröcken über die Bühne schweben. Wer an die Kunstform Tanz denkt, trägt unweigerlich Bilder von scheinbar endlos biegsamen Körpern, voller Schönheit, Kraft und Jugend in sich.
Doch der Eindruck der Leichtigkeit täuscht. Abertausende Stunden Training sind notwendig, um einen Tänzerkörper für die Bühne zu formen – das gilt fürs Ballett, aber auch für den zeitgenössischen Tanz. Tanzkunst ist körperliche Schwerstarbeit und wie im Spitzensport ist der Leistungsdruck hoch. Das fordert seinen Tribut. Tänzer werden sehr früh „alt“. Mit wenigen Ausnahmen haben die meisten Tänzer mit 40 Jahren ihren Zenit erreicht. Das Duett mit der eigenen Vergänglichkeit beginnt und ein möglicher Bühnenabschied wird absehbar. Doch das Aufhören ist ein schwieriger Prozess. Tänzer bleiben Tänzer, selbst wenn ihnen der Körper Grenzen setzt.
In unserer Gesellschaft wird Altern immer noch als negativ gewertet. Der Rückgang der körperlichen Leistungsfähigkeit zeigt, dass etwas vorbei ist. Doch gleichzeitig lässt das Mehr an Lebenserfahrung viele Tänzer erst diese magische Strahlkraft entwickeln, die sie als junge Tänzer niemals erreicht hätten. Darin liegt ein künstlerisches Potenzial, das für viele Choreographen reizvoll ist. So werden tradierte Erwartungshaltungen an technische Perfektion und die Glorifizierung der Jugend zunehmend infrage gestellt.
Die Dokumentation begleitet die Tänzer Friedemann Vogel (Erster Solist, Stuttgarter Ballett), Polina Semionova (Primaballerina, Staatsballett Berlin), William Moore (Erster Solist, Ballett Zürich) und Gesine Moog (Tänzerin im Dance On Ensemble) auf einem Stück ihres Weges. Alle vier gewähren persönliche Einblicke in ihre Tänzerkarrieren und reflektieren über diese Zeit des Übergangs.
